John Dowland

John Dowland (1563-1626)

English lutenist and composer whose career was for a time exercised abroad. He had become a Catholic and in consequence found it hard to be accepted in England, though he did eventually work in the service of James I and Charles I. His exquisite songs with lute accompaniment have an important place in the development of English solo song. Although he commanded huge fees, he went out of favour and died in some poverty.
