Born into a musical family in Milan in 1953, Chailly served his apprenticeship with Claudio Abbado at La Scala and held prestigious posts in Berlin, London and Bologna before being appointed chief conductor of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in 1988. A long-standing association with the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig began in earnest in 2001, and he remains their chief conductor, with plans extending as far as 2020. Chailly has also maintained a close relationship with La Scala, and will hold the post of music director there from 2017 until 2022.

Chailly is perhaps best known for his interpretations of Beethoven, Brahms, Bruckner and in particular Mahler, though he is also acclaimed in Italian opera and contemporary music; he holds an exclusive recording contract with Decca and was made a ‘Cavaliere di Gran Croce OMRI’ in 1998.
