The British conductor Jonathan Nott was born in Solihull in 1962 and studied at Cambridge University and the Royal Northern College of Music before establishing his conducting career in Germany, beginning in Frankfurt and then moving onto Wiesbaden and Bamberg, where he served as principal conductor from 2000-2016. During his tenure at Bamberg he recorded the complete Schubert symphonies, an acclaimed Mahler cycle which was nominated for numerous awards, a Wagner album with tenor Klaus Florian Vogt, and music by Stravinsky, Janáček and Bruckner.

Nott has also served as music director of Ensemble InterContemporain (the leading contemporary music chamber group formed by Pierre Boulez in 1972) and the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra, and is currently music director of the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra and L’Orchestre de la Suisse Romande. His discography includes Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde with Jonas Kaufmann and the Wiener Philharmoniker, Ligeti with the Berliner Philharmoniker, and Strauss, Debussy and Ligeti with L’Orchestre de la Suisse Romande.
