Nationality: French

The French conductor and violinist Jean-Christophe Spinosi was born in Corsica in 1964, and founded the Matheus Quartet (which subsequently evolved into the Ensemble Matheus) in 1991; he is particularly noted for his interpretations of baroque repertoire and Rossini.

In the early 2000s he made a series of acclaimed recordings for Naïve’s pioneering Vivaldi Edition, including the world premiere recording of Griselda (which won the Opera Category at the 2007 BBC Music Magazine Awards), Orlando Furioso, La fida Ninfa (winner of a Diapason d’Or de l’Année in 2009), and La verità in cimento; his discography also includes Cecilia Bartoli’s second Vivaldi Album on Decca, recitals with Philippe Jaroussky, Malena Ernman and Marie-Nicole Lemieux. and a DVD/Blu-ray of Rossini’s L’Italiana in Algeri (with Bartoli making her belated debut in the title-role) from the Salzburg Festival.

Spinosi was awarded the Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 2006.
