This pairing of concertos Nos 25 and 27, recorded with Chamber Orchestra of Europe, is Piotr Anderszewski’s third Warner Classics album of Mozart concertos. “In Mozart I tend to prefer to direct from the keyboard,” he explains, “His concertos are like chamber works...The piano is in dialogue with the orchestra, conversing and interacting all the time. The two works are very different …No 25 is very grand, complex and sophisticated; No 27, Mozart’s final piano concerto, is in a major key, but underneath it I sense an incredible sadness … It always amazes me how deep this music is.”"

As for his direction from the keyboard, he gives the music time to breathe, never shying away from a gentle- slow-down – applied with good sense – or a thoughtful manipulation of expressive phrasing

There are so many moments here that bring a smile to a jaded Mozartian’s face: little holdings back, touches of ornamentation, that magical moment in K595’s slow movement where the piano’s song is shadowed only by flute and violins, exquisitely done here...Anderszewski’s piano is right there in the middle of it, supporting, chattering away in passagework, never once hogging the spotlight.

Conducting from the keyboard he achieves total unanimity, and his first entry in K503 captures the ambiguity of which he speaks, at once bright-eyed (that pin-point brilliance) and wistful – a smile, as it were, through tears. He is profoundly conciliatory in the Andante, and throughout there are minute tonal shadings and siftings of a kind accessible to very few pianists. Yet it is in K595 that he achieves an epitome of grace and subtlety. Acutely sensitive to music where ‘brightness falls from the air’ and where sadness changes into something deep and profoundly expressive, he captures all of Mozart’s unsettling genius. Warner Classics’ sound is impeccable and so one can only hope for more from this incomparable artist.

It is the intimacy of his rapport with the (sadly uncredited) wind soloists of the COE that makes this issue so special. His pristine fingerwork is always at the service of the score in continuous dialogue with the orchestral musicians, but he brings personal touches to these frequently recorded pieces.
