The influential director Krzysztof Warlikowski creates an enthralling diptych that has not existed in this form before. He merges the two one-act-operas of Hungary’s greatest composer Béla Bartók and the brilliant French composer Francis Poulenc into one amazing work. A great achievement with pure emotions and passion in an excellent interpretation by the exceptional singer Barbara Hannigan in the title role of La Voix Humaine.

John Relyea’s rich bass and Ekaterina Gubanova’s refulgent mezzo have no problems with the Bartók, and depict their emotional development with precision. Likewise Barbara Hannigan as Elle, whose physical commitment is so extreme that one wonders how she can possibly sustain a vocal line; but she does, with ease. All three are verbally clear, helped by Esa-Pekka Salonen’s detailed conducting, which maximizes Bartók’s glittering orchestration without covering the singers, and supports Hannigan through Poulenc’s more refined soundworld. Complex, multi-layered, challenging – seriously worth watching.

At first glance, the two one-act-operas La Voix Humaine and Blubeard’s Castle have no mutual musical relation. And yet, in this outstanding live recording with an extraordinary successful cast – Barbara Hannigan, John Relyea, Ekaterina Gubanova, and the Paris Opera Orchestra -, under the refined direction of Esa-Pekka Salonen, Krzysztof Warlikowski’s inspired staging reunites both works in one absolutely fascinating production.
