To celebrate the centenary of the RAF Prima Facie is pleased to announce the release of Moving Parts Music for Wind Orchestra by Stephen McNeff, performed by the Band of The Royal Air Force Rgiment. Born (1951) in Belfast, Stephen McNeff grew up in Swansea, cultural hotbed and forcing ground of the mid century Welsh arts scene, home of Dylan Thomas, Daniel Jones. Home also of an inspirational teacher who first got his creative juices flowing. Studies were at the RAM (where he shared a conducting class with Simon Rattle) The trajectory continues to this day, but, dominant as it was and is, music theatre is by no means the only thing in his life: in 2005 for instance Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra appointed him first as -Composer in the House - and, two years later - Composer in Residence - working not only with the Orchestra, the Symphony Chorus and the contemporary ensemble Korkoro but in a range regionally organised and promoted musical, community and educational projects. The music on the CD represents works which range from his first pieces for wind orchestra to the most recent. In that sense they sum up over twenty-five years work in the medium. McNeff hasrevisited them on a number of occasion ? sometimes as they were being prepared for publication or when he was adapting them and used the benefit of later experience to refine and rennovate, dust and polish them. This latest collection of music by a current and relevant British composer is performed by the The Band of the Royal Air Force Regiment Conducted by Chris I'Anson and Mark Heron. The programme is diverse, large scale ensemble pieces are mixed with two concertos, one for flute featuring Rachel Carpenter and a percussion concerto featuring the renowned O Duo.
