 New Publications, New Sheet Music Publications - January 2018

Welcome to our hand-picked highlights from amongst new and recent sheet music publications, which this month include piano music by Brahms, Fauré, and Grieg, new editions of orchestral works by Debussy and Vaughan Williams, and songs from the hit musical Hamilton arranged for ukulele.

Brahms: Piano Sonata No. 3 in F minor, op. 5

Johannes Brahms’s piano sonatas opp. 1, 2 and 5 were among the first works that the then 20-year-old composer published. This revised Henle Urtext edition is based on the text of the New Brahms Complete Edition. The fingerings are by Andreas Boyde and offer the performer ingenious solutions to mastering this work.

Fauré: Nocturne No. 6 in D flat major, op. 63

Gabriel Fauré composed the Sixth Nocturne in 1894, while spending the summer at the house of his parents-in-law. With its strong contrasts of tempo, metre and harmony, it is by far the most significant and best-known of his Nocturnes. This new Henle Urtext edition includes fingerings by Rolf Koenen, and is edited by Felix Loy.

Grieg: Norwegian Dances, op. 35 (piano duet)

The Norwegian Dances of 1880 are arrangements for piano duet of old folk tunes that Grieg took from a collection published by the musician and researcher Ludvig Mathias Lindeman. For this new Henle Urtext edition, all the extant autographs in the Grieg Archive in Bergen, Norway were consulted along with contemporary first editions.

Widor: Organ Symphony No. 2 in D major, op. 13 No. 2

This Carus edition of Widor's Second Organ Symphony is based on the Paris edition of 1928/29, the last one to be published during his lifetime. The corrections which the composer made after the publication of the 1928/29 edition have also been taken into consideration, and earlier editions have been consulted in order to clarify individual variant readings.

Ravel: Tzigane (Violin and piano)

This new printing of Ravel's popular piece is part of Durand's "Musique française" series, designed for students and teachers as well as professionals. These editions offer masterworks in French music, with performance suggestions and historical and stylistic commentary by noted scholars.

Sassmannshaus Viola Recital Album, Volume 1

This album contains a wide selection of easy recital pieces. As all pieces are written entirely in first position, they can be used after just a few months of lessons. The piano part may be played by the teacher or an advanced student, or alternatively a second viola part allows duet playing with the teacher during lessons.

Debussy: Première Rhapsodie for Clarinet and Orchestra (Full Score)

Debussy was commissioned to write his Première Rhapsodie in 1909 for the final examination at the Paris Conservatoire in 1910, and orchestrated it in the summer of 1911. Bärenreiter's new scholarly-critical publication is the first Urtext edition of the orchestral version, drawing on every known source and taking into account a previously ignored source that sheds new light on the piece.
