New Publications, New Sheet Music Publications - April 2018

Welcome to our hand-picked highlights from amongst new and recent sheet music publications, which this month include music from Star Wars: The Last Jedi, piano music by Bartók from Henle Verlag, a new edition of Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto from Bärenreiter (using a recently-discovered source for the solo violin part), and a series of vocal anthologies from Chester Music.

Bartók: Improvisations on Hungarian Peasant Songs, op. 20

The manner in which Bartók combines folk melodies with subtle, avant-garde sounds here was later described by Bartók himself as venturing to “the outermost limits”. He also breaks up the song structures so radically into their constituent motives that the title “improvisations” best conveys his approach to this folk music. The musical text of this Urtext edition, edited by Bartók expert László Somfai, is taken from the relevant volume of the Bartók Complete Edition.

Bartók: Romanian Christmas Songs

In the first edition of 1918, these pieces were conceived for children’s hands and so were published “without octaves”; but in the revised edition of 1936 presented here, Bartók added an appendix featuring alternative “concert versions”. Henle's Urtext edition integrates these concert variants directly into the musical text, and also offers the original melodies and translations of the texts to provide an insight into the origins of this rather different kind of Christmas music.

Mozart: Piano Sonata in A major, K331 (300i)

This new Urtext edition of Mozart’s Piano Sonata in A major K331 (300i), with the famous Rondo ‘Alla turca’, draws on a recently-discovered autograph source to create a version which has substantial differences to earlier editions – particularly in the six variations and the Menuetto. Particular attention is also paid to the specific use of articulation marks, as Mozart learned to use them from his father Leopold.

Debussy: Nocturne for Piano

One of Debussy's most popular early piano works, this piece is straightforward in its construction but highly advanced in its harmonies. Nothing is known about the history of its composition: Debussy’s 1892 contract with his publisher states merely that the composer had originally called it “Interlude”, but then decided upon the far more suitable title of “Nocturne”.

Mendelssohn: Violin Concerto in E minor, op. 64

One of the violinists with whom Mendelssohn is known to have performed his violin concerto was Hubert Léonard, a young Belgian virtuoso about whom little is known. Recently-discovered proofs for the violin part reveal how Léonard played the concerto. Besides containing bowing marks and fingerings, they also show how Léonard executed shifts of position and where he employed open strings, as well as modifications to dynamic markings and additional legato bowings. Alongside this revised edition, Bärenreiter has also published the early version of the concerto from 1844, and a separate booklet on performance practice.
