New from Oxford University Press comes a Mass setting that could and should be used in church services where there is an ambitious choir and a decent organ. . . There are some very strong musical ideas and structural devices . . . At no time is the vocal writing particularly difficult, the whole concept being essentially tonal . . . I love the a cappella unison at 'Qui tollis', and the 'birdsong' organ part at the beginning of the Sanctus. There is real strength and purpose about the Gloria. Composition students would do well to study an Agnus Dei that reworks the material of the Kyrie without wholesale repetition. OUP have given us another score which is admirably clear in its layout. This Mass is a welcome addition to the repertoire
