More Prokofiev from Gergiev and the Mariinsky
Hot on the heels of his mighty Prokofiev marathon at the Proms, we hear Russian colossus Valery Gergiev is set to record a number of Prokofiev's symphonies for the Mariinsky label - Nos. 4, 6 and 7, plus the Piano Concerto No. 5 with soloist (and specialist in Russian piano repertoire) Sergei Babayan.
Gergiev's Prokofiev pedigree is considerable and has earned him widespread praise - the Independent heard 'the gravity of a monumental sculpture in bronze' in his account of the Second Symphony, while the Financial Times observed of his Fifth that 'where others surrender to the heat of the moment, he remains patient, meaning that the climaxes, when they finally arrive, are all the more powerful'.
