Hi-Res Highlights, Hi-Res Highlights - September 2016

September 2016 Hi-Res RoundupIt's been two years since we launched our Hi-Res download offering - and our catalogue now includes over six thousand albums, both old and new. You can browse through our full Hi-Res selection here.

However, six thousand is quite a lot - so in July we started putting together a monthly roundup offering some of our thoughts on the best of the best!

Here's this month's selection…

Hi-Res New Releases

The pick of this month's newly-released Hi-Res recordings.

Fabio Biondi showcases Telemann's solo violin writing - a dazzling set of Fantasias that, like Bach's solo violin works, combine the polyphonic German style with more Italianate elements.

Available Formats: CD, MP3, FLAC, Hi-Res FLAC

Signum's complete Mozart opera set proceeds, with a new completion of the unfinished Zaïde - with Sophie Bevan as the heroine, Allan Clayton as her lover Gomatz, and Stuart Jackson as the tyrannical Soliman who opposes them.

Available Formats: CD, MP3, FLAC, Hi-Res FLAC

Ollie Mustonen and the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra under Hannu Lintu give stirring accounts of three Prokofiev concertos, including the relatively rarely-heard No. 4 in B flat major.

Available Formats: CD, MP3, FLAC, Hi-Res FLAC

The incomparable Arabella Steinbacher plays a selection of violin favourites - Sarasate, Massenet, Ravel, Vaughan Williams and more.

Available Formats: SACD, MP3, FLAC, Hi-Res FLAC

The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra under Daniele Gatti paint Berlioz's obsessive scenes with an appropriate level of garish colour - whirling dancers, thunderstorms, witches and the rest are all present and correct!

Available Formats: SACD, MP3, FLAC, Hi-Res FLAC, Hi-Res+ FLAC

Recent Hi-Res Re-issues

The greatest performances of yesteryear, newly remastered and re-released in Hi-Res.

The cast-list of this benchmark recording simply speaks for itself. Karajan and the Berliner Philharmoniker; Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Gundula Janowitz, Christa Ludwig, Martti Talvela, Edda Moser, Jon Vickers... A once-in-a-lifetime Ring.

Available Formats: MP3, FLAC, Hi-Res FLAC

Fritz Wunderlich brings his trademark finesse to Schubert's exquisite lieder - the bittersweet tale of Die schöne Müllerin takes centre stage, with Hubert Giesen a sensitive and responsive partner at the piano.

Available Formats: MP3, FLAC, Hi-Res FLAC

Claudio Arrau is almost legendary among pianists, and nowhere is here talent more clearly on display than on this pairing of Beethoven's Third Piano Concerto (with Eugene Ormandy at the helm of the Philadelphia Orchestra) and the mighty Waldstein sonata.

Available Formats: MP3, FLAC, Hi-Res FLAC

Two of the most enduringly popular violin concertos in the repertoire - Beethoven's and Mendelssohn's - in the infinitely assured hands of the peerless Jascha Heifetz, with Charles Munch and the Boston Symphony Orchestra.

Available Formats: MP3, FLAC, Hi-Res FLAC

Liszt's formidable Années de pèlerinage represent a daunting combination of virtuosity and harmonic daring; Lazar Berman (who famously made his American début with a spellbinding account of the Transcendental Études) makes light work of all three suites.

Available Formats: MP3, FLAC, Hi-Res FLAC
