Christian Poltéra (cello), Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, Gilbert Varga

Composed in 1966, Shostakovich's Second Cello Concerto is often regarded as a watershed work, heralding his final stylistic period marked by a certain sombreness and a trend towards more transparent scoring. Martinů's Cello Concerto No. 2 didn't receive its first performance until 1965, six years after Martinu's death.

Bartók's six quartets were written (between 1907 and 1939) at crucial turning points in his creative development. From the elegiac tone of Quartet No. 1 to the sadness and wry parody of No. 6, by way of the mirror forms and atmospheric 'night music' of Nos. 4 and 5, they represent perhaps the biggest interpretative challenge in the genre alongside the Beethoven quartets.

Trinity College Choir Cambridge, Stephen Layton

A programme spanning the variety and sheer emotional range of Stanford's Anglican choral music (with a notable contribution from Owain Park in the Fantasia and Toccata for organ). You are unlikely to hear quite so stirring a rendition of St Patrick's Breastplate for some time to come…

Available Formats: CD, MP3, FLAC, Hi-Res FLAC

Joseph Haydn's Op. 20 quartets are often said to represent an unprecedented flowering of his string quartet writing. The last three quartets of the set are performed here by the Chiaroscuro Quartet, an ensemble formed in 2005 by the violinists Alina Ibragimova and Pablo Hernán Benedí, violist Emilie Hörnlund and cellist Claire Thirion.

Ensemble Pygmalion, Raphaël Pichon

Late sixteenth-century Florence was a theatre, as is shown by these intermedi (interludes) that sought to achieve the perfect blend between music and poetry. Inserted into plays imitating the ancient writers, these entertainments were presented with lavish visual and musical resources. Raphaël Pichon has selected the finest gems from this repertory, featuring the figures of Apollo, Orpheus and Eurydice, and above all Cupid.
