Opera highlights include Karajan's 1967 Ring Cycle remastered for Blu-ray audio - plus Plácido Domingo stars in a new production of Verdi's Macbeth from Los Angeles.

The conductor Marek Janowski and the Rundfunk Sinfonieorchester Berlin continue their critically acclaimed collaboration with Pentatone in a magnificent reading of Beethoven’s monumental Missa Solemnis, recorded live at the Berlin Philharmonie in September 2016 in partnership with Deutschlandradio Kultur.

Aldeburgh Strings and Aldeburgh Winds combine for music by Richard Strauss. Metamorphosen, a 25-minute string masterpiece written as an elegy in the wake of the Second World War, contrasts with the early Serenade, which radiates Mozartian bonhomie.

Marking the eightieth birthday of Gundula Janowitz in August 2017, this set celebrates her clear and honest soprano voice through a selection of her opera, oratorio and Lieder recordings. The favourite lyric soprano of Herbert von Karajan, Janowitz set the standard with her recordings of Mozart and Strauss which are still unsurpassed.

Riccardo Chailly is one of the staunchest performers of this work, and therefore it is appropriate that he chose this piece for his inaugural concert as Claudio Abbado’s successor as music director of the Lucerne Festival Orchestra.
