Obituary, 2020 Goodbyes

Mirella freniA tribute to some of the musicians who died in 2020, including guitarist Julian Bream, composers Krzysztof Penderecki, Ennio Morricone and Nikolai Kapustin, and singers Mirella Freni, Mady Mesplé, and Dame Vera Lynn.

The music is 'Io sono l'umile ancella' from Cilea's Adriana Lecouvreur, sung by Mirella Freni, in which the heroine reflects on the fragility and brevity of a performer's life and the immortality of art itself. Her dramatic commitment and vocal luminosity are displayed to perfection on this recording from 1992, for which she is joined by the Orchestra del Gran Teatro La Fenice under conductor Roberto Abbado.
