Italian mezzo Daniela Barcellona was born in Trieste in 1969 and trained there with Alessandro Vitiello, whom she subsequently married. She specialises in bel canto travesty-roles (notably Rossini’s Arsace, Malcolm and Tancredi), though her repertoire also encompasses dramatic mezzo roles such as Santuzza, Amneris, Eboli and La Principessa in Adriana Lecouvreur.

Barcellona’s discography includes Arsace on Sir Mark Elder’s award-winning period-instrument account of [Semiramide (‘our finest contemporary Arsace’ – Gramophone), Nelly on the world premiere recording of Bellini’s Adelson e Salvini on Opera Rara, Verdi Requiems under Lorin Maazel, Gianandrea Noseda and Claudio Abbado, Malcolm in the Metropolitan opera’s production of La donna del lago with Joyce DiDonato and Juan Diego Flórez on DVD/Blu-ray, and Berlioz’s Roméo et Juliette with Sir Colin Davis and the London Symphony orchestra.
