American mezzo Kate Aldrich was born in Maine in 1973, and came to international prominence in 2001 after singing Amneris in Franco Zeffirelli’s production of Aida (available on DVD from Arthaus Musik). She is particularly associated with the title role in Carmen (which she has sung at the Metropolitan Opera and in Vancouver, Dresden, Berlin, Tokyo and Beijing), and is also an acclaimed Octavian, Adalgisa, Adriano (Rienzi), Romeo (I Capuleti) and Marguerite (La damnation de Faust). Aldrich has also been involved with numerous contemporary operas, including taking the central roles in Jake Heggie’s Dead Man Walking and Great Scott, and in various world premiere recordings of nineteenth-century works including Spontini’s Olympie and Massenet’s Le Mage (both on the Bru Zane label).

Her discography includes Rienzi from the Deutsche Oper Berlin (‘The real vocal honours go to Kate Aldrich's Adriano’ – The Guardian), the title-role in Donizetti’s La Favorite from Toulouse, Norma from Bologna, and La clemenza di Tito on CPO (‘Aldrich is fluent in the roulades of ‘Parto’’ – Gramophone).
