The English opera director Graham Vick was born in Birkenhead in 1953 and trained at the Royal Northern College of Music. He began his career at Scottish Opera, and served as director of productions at Glyndebourne in the late 1990s, where he staged works including The Cunning Little Vixen, The Queen of Spades, Manon Lescaut, Così fan tutte, Pélleas et Mélisande, and Lulu.

Productions on DVD and Blu-ray include an ‘ingeniously designed (Penguin Guide) Rigoletto[/i< from Barcelona, a ‘high camp’ (BBC Music Magazine) Mitridate from the Royal Opera House, a ‘breathtaking’ (Gramophone) Aida from Bregenz, and Handel’s Tamerlano from Madrid, with Plácido Domingo in the title-role.

In 1987 Vick founded Birmingham Opera Company, quickly gaining a reputation for presenting innovative and immersive productions of challenging repertoire in unusual settings and involving members of the local community; in 2012 they gave the world premiere of Stockhausen’s Mittwoch aus Licht, and their 2014 production of Mussorgsky’s Khovanschina (presented as Khovanskygate) won an International Opera Award. Vick was made a CBE in 2009.
