Mily Balakirev

Mily Balakirev (1837-1910)

Russian composer and principal member of the group of Nationalistic composers known as 'The Five'.

He was much influenced by Russian folk song, encouraged by his mentor Glinka, but also by the European Romantic tradition as represented by Liszt.

A depressive condition inhibited his composing and he took a job as a railway clerk and later as a school inspector.

In addition to two symphonies there are two tone poems, Islamey and Tamara.
