Giuseppe Verdi

Giuseppe Verdi (1813-1901)

Composer

Italian composer who took Italian grand opera to new heights.

His application to study at the Milan Conservatoire was rejected but his operas had their greatest success at La Scala, the famous Milanese opera house. Rigoletto, Il Trovatore, Falstaff and Otello are amongst settings of this religious text.

Towards the end of his life he founded a retirement home for musicians which still survives.
