Edvard Hagerup Grieg

Edvard Hagerup Grieg (1843-1907)

Composer

Edvard Grieg is perhaps the most famous of all Norwegian composers, and one of the best-known from Scandinavia as a whole. Writing at a time of increasing nationalism throughout Europe, like many of his contemporaries (Sibelius, Smetana and others) he sought to establish a national musical style that would be characteristic of the nation, rather than influenced by the major regional powers (in Grieg's case Denmark and Sweden).

His musical style is melodious and lyrical, though not iwthout its dissonant elements; his most famous works, such as the Wedding Day at Troldhaugen and In the Hall of the Mountain-King from his Lyric Pieces for piano, owe their success in large part to this gift for tuneful invention. Grieg also composed one of the most enduringly popular piano concertos, as well as numerous pieces of programmatic orchestral music, songs, piano miniatures and a small number of sonatas and chamber works.
