Charles Gounod studied Bach’s works intensively. He is said to have improvised his expressive, cantabile melody over the famous broken chords of Bach’s C-major Prelude BWV 846 at a private performance in 1852. This arrangement would later became world famous when underlaid with the text of the Ave Maria. Several instrumental versions of it were initially published in 1853, including one for solo piano by Gounod himself that is presented here for the first time as an Urtext edition.

Janácek’s poetic cycle On an overgrown path is surely among his most popular piano works. With exemplary clarity, the accompanying texts in Henle’s Urtext edition shed light on the complicated source situation. In addition, an appendix to the musical text contains those pieces that Janácek either did not include in the cycle, or that remained unfinished. Edited by the world’s foremost Janácek researcher, Jiří Zahrádka, with fingering by Lars Vogt.

Liszt understood a “rhapsody” to signify the highest degree of musical freedom: a constant process of transformation and variation of themes and motifs, all bound up with constant shifts of emotion. This Henle Urtext edition, which draws on all the available sources, now provides players with an opportunity to rediscover Liszt’s First Rhapsody. Italian Liszt specialist Vincenzo Maltempo provides the fingerings.

Maestro Murray Perahia and Henle’s own proven Beethoven expert Norbert Gertsch present the first of three volumes of Beethoven’s Complete Piano Sonatas in a new Urtext edition. Along with his invaluable fingerings, Murray Perahia bestows upon the piano world his in-depth reflections on the emotional world and structural makeup of these compositions.

Also available as a hardback edition.

The extraordinarily gifted composer and pianist Gideon Klein was murdered in the Fürstengrube concentration camp at the age of 25. One of the undeniable highlights of his small compositional legacy is his Sonata for Piano. Its three movements were written in reverse order in the Terezín concentration camp in 1943; only a three-measure draft of the intended fourth movement has survived. This first Urtext edition has been expanded to include the previously unpublished Landscape.

In his Piano Sketchbook, Mike Cornick’s many inimitable styles shine through like a beacon. Many of the pieces were composed during the Covid lockdown, joined by two older compositions that Cornick found in some old files. The result is a delightful mixture of light musical fun. All the pieces are short and can be enjoyed by players of intermediate level.

Unlike Bach’s other oratorio compositions, there is no definitive version of the St. John Passion. The first version of 1724 which is today’s standard version represents a mixture of different readings. The second version of 1725 was performed under the direction of Bach himself and can therefore be considered authentic.

Béla Bartók’s six string quartets are 20th-century milestones of the genre. In this First Quartet, Bartók combines late-Romantic sounds with elements of the folk music that had since 1905 been a source of increasing interest to him. This definitive edition, supervised by Bartók scholar László Somfai, is the first-ever Urtext edition of this work.

String Quartet No. 2, Op. 17 is also available alongside study score of the two quartets.

With his op. 87, Dvorák delivered a challenging and mature work in which a mastery of form is combined with memorable themes and surprising harmonic turns, leading it quickly to conquer the hearts of both performers and audiences. The engraver’s model for the first edition is lost; but together with the first edition the autograph survives as a second source for the critical edition, with which Henle continues its series of Urtext editions of this composer.
