This piece was written to a commission by Louisa and Lewis Creed to celebrate their Silver Wedding, and is dedicated to them. It consists of five contrasting songs based on Albanian folk tunes. Whilst the first song, 'From Across the Sea', has its origin in the music of the Albanian community of Calabria who emigrated to Italy five centuries ago, the remaining songs are based on the folklore of Albania. The folk melodies serve as a point of departure for the proliferation of an elaborate melodic and harmonic vocabulary, and each tune, with its own flavour and character, contributes to the variety of the garland. The first performance was given by the Fluterie Ensemble on 20th November 1997 at King's Manor Hall, York University.
