While Paul Arden Taylor was still a student, his harmony professor, Dr Eric Thiman, asked him to write a fugal exposition on a theme of his own choice he obliged with a subject based on the first section of the Sailor's Hornpipe. Dr Thiman gave him 10 out of 10 and suggested that he complete the fugue for the next lesson, which he did. He decided that this was quite a nice way to spend harmony lessons, so he wrote two more fugues, one on a theme which is full of eastern promise but no-one can name, the other using Scotland the Brave. The three fugues, collectively entitled Carry On Bach were first performed to an astonished but enthusiastic audience at a lunchtime concert in the Duke's Hall at the Royal Academy of Music on June 26th 1974. 1.Bach goes to Sea 2.Bach goes East 3.Bach goes North.
