Albania is divided into twenty-six regions, and each has its own folk music tradition. These dances come from Kuk's, the region of the Composer's exile, and therefore must have a special significance for him. Aleksand'r Lalo (b.1948) is an Albanian composer. He began to teach himself music when he was ten years old. He became the conductor of the circus band in Tirana when he was sixteen. After studying agriculture at the university he took private lessons in harmony and orchestration and won a place at the Conservatoire where he studied composition. His main output is of light music, songs and music for films. After the 1971 Festival of Song he was accused of being too modern, and sent into internal exile in Kuk's, Northern Albania, for 're-education'. The entire town of Kuk's was demolished in the 1970s to make way for a hydro-electric power station, and it is said that Lalo was the last citizen to leave before demolition began.
